About MotoTrader

Nigeria's trusted marketplace for buying and selling cars.

Who we are

MotoTrader is an online marketplace that connects car buyers with private sellers and registered dealers across Nigeria. We make it easier to list, discover, and buy vehicles — and to do so with more confidence than the typical informal car sale.

We are a marketplace and facilitation platform: we provide the tools, verification, and payment infrastructure that bring buyers and sellers together. MotoTrader is not the seller of the vehicles listed and is not a party to the sale contract between users.

What we set out to fix

Buying a car in Nigeria often means trusting a stranger with a large amount of cash, with little verification and no recourse if something goes wrong. MotoTrader is built to reduce that risk on both sides — giving buyers more information and safer ways to pay, and giving sellers verified, committed buyers.

How we build trust

Identity verification

Buyers on payment plans are verified against their NIN before any credit relationship begins.

Car history reports

Check a vehicle's history before you commit, sourced from multiple data providers.

Flexible payment plans

Eligible cars can be bought with a deposit and monthly instalments, with optional auto-pay.

Verified listings

Sellers agree to describe vehicles accurately, and we remove listings that break our rules.

What the listing badges mean

Every listing can carry up to two badges — one about the seller, one about the car. We only show a badge for something we can actually stand behind.

Verified Dealer

A dealer whose identity is confirmed with their NIN. Their whole inventory carries this.

ID-Verified Seller

A private seller whose identity is confirmed with their NIN — you don't need to be a dealer.

Verified owner

The seller's verified name matches this car's registration documents, reviewed by us. Only possible for cars registered in Nigeria (with a plate) — where an ownership record exists.

VIN-verified

The car's details are checked against its 17-character VIN — available for any car, including tokunbo and brand-new.

Tokunbo and brand-new cars don't get a “Verified owner” badge — an unregistered car has no Nigerian ownership record to verify, so we don't pretend to. No badge is a claim about a car's condition or accident history; for that, buy a history report. Customs & duty verification for tokunbo is coming soon — checked directly against government records by VIN, with no paperwork needed from sellers.

How MotoTrader makes money

We charge listing fees, optional dealer subscriptions, car history report fees, and a small facilitation fee on payment plans. We never take a hidden cut of a private sale. You can see everything on our pricing page.
