Privacy Policy

When you use MotoTrader, we collect:

• Account information: name, email address, and password (hashed)
• Profile information: phone number, state, city
• Listing data: car details, photos, price, location
• Payment information: transaction references (we do not store card details — Paystack handles card data)
• Identity verification data: for buyers applying for a payment plan, your National Identification Number (NIN) and the verified legal name returned by our verification provider. We store a one-way hash of the NIN, not the raw number.
• Payment plan data: deposit, fee and instalment records, and — where you authorise auto-pay — a direct-debit mandate authorisation reference (no bank login or card data is stored by us).
• Usage data: pages visited, search queries, listing views
• Device data: IP address, browser type, and operating system

We use your information to:

• Create and manage your account
• Display your listings to other users
• Process payments and subscriptions
• Send transactional emails (listing confirmations, report notifications)
• Improve the Platform through usage analytics
• Detect and prevent fraud and abuse

We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

We share your data only with:

• Paystack / NIBSS — to process payments and, for auto-pay, set up and run direct-debit mandates (subject to their privacy policies)
• Identity verification provider — to confirm your NIN for payment plan eligibility
• Supabase — our database and file storage provider
• NHTSA / VinAudit — VIN queries for history reports (VIN only, no personal data)
• Sellers — for an active or defaulted payment plan, your verified name and phone number (see "Payment plans & recovery" below)
• Law enforcement — if required by law or to protect safety

When you create a car listing, certain information is publicly visible to all visitors, including your first name, city, state, and contact phone number (if provided). Do not include sensitive personal information in listing descriptions.

When you apply for a payment plan, we verify your identity and record the plan's payments. To protect sellers in a credit relationship, we share the minimum contact information — your verified legal name and phone number — with the seller, but only once the plan is active or has defaulted. We do not share your contact with the seller merely because you applied or while a plan is pending.

The legal basis for this sharing is the legitimate interest of the seller in contacting a buyer about repayment and recovery, balanced against your rights, and your consent given when you accept the Payment Plan Agreement. This is consistent with the data-minimisation and purpose-limitation principles of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).

We use cookies to maintain your login session and remember your preferences. We do not use advertising cookies or tracking pixels. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, but this may affect Platform functionality.

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. Listings remain in our system for 90 days after expiry. You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing privacy@mototrader.ng.

We use industry-standard security measures including TLS encryption, hashed passwords, and access controls. No system is completely secure. In the event of a data breach affecting your personal data, we will notify affected users within 72 hours of becoming aware.

MotoTrader is not intended for users under 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect data from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

You have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate data
• Request deletion of your data
• Object to processing of your data
